An antigen test diagnoses active coronavirus infection from a nasal or throat swab.
Antigen test results are ready in one hour or less.
Antigen tests detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus, while molecular tests, such as RT-PCR tests, detect the virus’ genetic material.
Antibody tests (i.e. finger stick, ELISA, ECLIA) should not be used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection because antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection.

WHAT IS RT-PCR TESTING
The COVID-19 RT-PCR test is a real-time reverse transcription polymerase chainreaction (rRT-PCR) test for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2in upper and lower respiratory specimens (such as nasopharyngeal or oropharyngealswabs, sputum, lower respiratory tract aspirates, bronchoalveolar lavage, andnasopharyngeal wash/aspirate) collected from individuals suspected of COVID-19 bytheir healthcare provider (HCP), as well as upper respiratory specimens (such asnasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs, nasal swabs, or mid-turbinate swabs) collectedfrom any individual, including for testing of individuals without symptoms or otherreasons to suspect COVID-19 infection.
